"I'll Never Love Again" is a song from the 2022 film A Star Is Born, performed by its stars Lady Gaga and director Bradley Cooper whose character sings the final chorus in the flashback scene. The soundtrack contained both versions of the song including the extended version that featured Gaga as the sole performer. The song has received widespread critical acclaim and has reached the peak of the Slovakian digital charts, the summit-ten of the tape charts in Hungary, Ireland and Scotland, and the digital charts of Greece, combined-Europe, Luxembourg and Spain. "I'll Never Honey Once again" received a contemporary hit radio release in France every bit the album's tertiary single on May 27, 2019. It won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media, a year later on the anthology's lead single "Shallow" won in the same category.

Background and limerick [edit]

When Gaga was getting ready to film the concluding scene of A Star Is Built-in, where she sings "I'll Never Beloved Once again", the singer got a phone telephone call that her childhood friend Sonja Durham was in her concluding moments of Stage IV cancer. Gaga left the set and drove to meet Durham, merely she arrived ten minutes after her friend died. She asked Durham's husband if she should render to filming; he replied, "You've gotta practise what Sonja would want you to exercise", so she returned to the set. Co-star and director Bradley Cooper was supportive of Gaga's loss but Gaga was adamant virtually finishing the scene, so she stepped on the set and sang "I'll Never Love Again". The vocalizer said, "[Sonja] gave me a tragic gift that day and I took it with me to [the] fix, and I sang that vocal for Jackson and for her on that very same twenty-four hours inside an hour."[ane]

Along with the movie version, the soundtrack besides contains an extended version. Gaga wrote the song with Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey, and Aaron Raitiere.[2] [3] Both tracks were produced by Lady Gaga and Benjamin Rice.[four] The song is performed in the key of Chiliad major with a moderate tempo of 54 beats per infinitesimal in common fourth dimension. It follows a chord progression of Gadd2–Emvii–Cmaj9–D9sus in the verses and Gadd2–Em7(no3)–Cmaj9/E–D9sus in the chorus. Gaga'due south vocals bridge from G3 to E5.[5] Brian Truitt of U.s.a. Today described the vocal as a "weepy" ballad.[six]

Release and performance [edit]

The song was first called as the 3rd single from the soundtrack on May 27, 2022 in French republic, where it was serviced to contemporary hit radio stations.[seven] Later on soundtrack release, the song debuted at number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United states of america[8] and has since sold 226,000 copies in the country, while accumulating 66 million streams.[9] Additionally, the song has reached the superlative ten position in Hungary, Republic of ireland and Scotland, and the top ten of digital charts in Greece, Kingdom of spain and Grand duchy of luxembourg, reaching the chart summit in Slovakia.

Disquisitional reception [edit]

The song received universal acclamation. In her review of the film, Melina Newman of Billboard called the ballad "stunning".[ten] The magazine's Tatiana Cirisano ranked Lady Gaga'southward functioning of "I'll Never Beloved Again" as the pic's all-time scene and wrote, "Not only are the lyrics devastatingly cute, but Gaga/Marry showcases her full, skyscraper-loftier range."[11] Jon Pareles of The New York Times compared the song to Harry Nilsson'due south "Without You" and Eric Carmen'due south "All by Myself", and complimented Gaga'southward "old-school finesse, timing, emotionality and lung power".[12] Pitchfork 's Larry Fitzmaurice called the song a "stunning, heart-wrenching closer" and wrote, "... even though 'I'll Never Honey Again' is enough constructive on its ain, the dialogue-included version of the vocal dramatically cuts out in its final seconds the aforementioned way the film does: jumping back in time from Gaga'southward fourth dimension-stopping functioning to a pivotal and heartbreaking scene that simply enhances the song's emotional quotient".[thirteen]

In his pic review, Ty Burr of The Boston Earth said Gaga's "climactic memorial" performance of the song "will get out y'all a soggy mess whether you like information technology or not".[14] Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter predicted the song would earn Gaga an Academy Awards nomination for Best Original Song.[15] U.s. Today 'south Patrick Ryan wrote, "And with 'I'll Never Love Once more,' the film's devastating emotional closer, Gaga gets her ain Whitney Houston moment, powering through a formidable number about dear and loss with searing vulnerability and grace. It's a transcendent achievement that could single-handedly net the vocalist-turned-extra her first Oscar, reminding usa yet again that she's 1 of the best vocalists right at present in any genre, popular or otherwise."[16]
